Description
With regard to the production of aluminium alloy T joints for stiffened panel construction by friction stir welding (FSW), an investigation is presented into the fabrication of FSW T joints with AA 6082-T6 alloys and the influence of welding parameters on microstructure and mechanical properties. Two thickness combinations of 6082-T6 alloy sheets were studied: 3 mm thick skin/6 mm thick stringer and 10 mm thick skin/10 mm thick stringer. The FSW tools incorporated a cylindrical plain shoulder geometry and a cylindrical threaded probe. Experiments were performed using an ISTIR PDS 4 FSW machine at rotational speeds of 1000-2000 rpm and welding speeds of 150-500 mm/min. Microstructure was observed by optical microscopy. Mechanical properties were characterised by tensile testing and subsequent fracture surface analysis.
