Description
A friction stir spot welding (FSSW) process was employed to fabricate dissimilar joints between an AA 5754 aluminium alloy and an AZ31 magnesium alloy in a lap joint configuration using a Zn layer at the interface to suppress intermetallic formation, and the microstructure and mechanical properties of the welded joints were investigated. FSSW experiments were conducted at rotational speeds up to 1600 rpm, plunge depths up to 1.6 mm and dwell times up to 1 s using an RPS 100 machine with a non-consumable tool. Microstructure was observed by optical microscopy, SEM and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Mechanical properties were characterised by shear testing and fracture surfaces were examined by laser confocal microscopy.
