Description
Friction stir welding was employed to fabricate welded joints in AA 7475-T7351 aluminium alloy plates (thickness 6.35 mm) and the effect of kissing bond defects on fatigue life and other mechanical properties was investigated. Welded test specimens with and without kissing bond defects were characterised by fatigue and tensile tests, microstructure was observed by optical microscopy and fracture surfaces were examined by SEM. The experimental results are discussed with respect to kissing bond defect influence on tensile strength, yield strength and elongation, kissing bond defect size effect on fatigue life, and fatigue crack initiation and propagation mechanisms.
