Description
Curved overlap joints of a 7B04 aluminium alloy were fabricated using the "RoboStir" robotic friction stir welding system and their microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated. The experimental set-up incorporated an ABB IRB7600 robot and a convex-concave shaped fixture. Welding was conducted at a tool rotational speed of 800 rpm and a welding speed of 120 mm/min. Microstructure was observed by metallography and mechanical properties were characterised by tensile tests. The effect of a welding defect generated by thermal expansion deformation in the convex section on joint performance is discussed.
