Description
A hybrid welding system called ultrasound supported friction stir welding was developed to mitigate the strength reducing effects of brittle intermetallic phase layers and was applied to the fabrication of dissimilar joints between wrought aluminium alloys and cast magnesium alloys. The experimental set-up incorporated a modified milling machine and a high power ultrasonic roll seam oscillator. Welding trials were conducted on AA 5454/AZ91 and AC-48000/AZ80 alloy systems. The welded joints were characterised by optical microscopic microstructure observations, fracture surface examinations and tensile tests.
