Description
Dissimilar joints between half-hard phosphorus deoxidised copper and annealed wrought AA 5083 alloys (Al, 4-4.9%Mg, 0.4-1%Mn) were fabricated by friction stir spot welding and the influence of process parameters on joint microstructure and mechanical properties was investigated. Welding was performed in an RPS 100 friction spot welding machine at tool rotational speeds of 1200-2000 rpm, sleeve plunge depths of 1.6-2 mm and dwell times of 0-2 s. Temperature profiles were measured by two K-type thermocouples. Microstructure was observed by optical microscopy and SEM equipped with a concentric backscatter detector. Single-shear tensile tests were conducted using a Zwick/Roell 1478 universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min.
