Description
The stationary shoulder friction stir welding (SSFSW) process was employed to fabricate defect-free joints in a variety of aluminium alloys and experiments were undertaken to investigate the microstructure and mechanical properties of the joints. The layout of the SSFSW equipment was examined. Trials were conducted on 2024-T3 Al-Cu alloy sheets (thickness 2 mm), 2198 Al-Li alloy sheets (thickness 2 mm) and 2A70-T6 Al-Cu-Mg-Ni alloy plates (thickness 9 mm). Welded joint microstructures were observed by optical microscopy. Mechanical properties were characterised by tensile tests.
