Description

Friction stir welding (FSW) was employed to fabricate butt joints in AW 5083 (Al, 4-4.9%Mg, 0.4-1%Mn) aluminium alloy plates (thickness 10 mm) and the influence of process parameters and tool geometry on the character and quality of welded joints was examined by undertaking studies of microstructure and mechanical properties. Welding tools made from AISI H13 tool steel were designed with different pin geometries. FSW experiments were conducted at a tool rotational speed of 600 rpm and a welding speed of 60 mm/min. Joint microstructure and quality were observed by optical microscopy and radiography. Static tensile tests and bend tests were performed according to STN EN ISO 6892-1:2010, 7438:2006 and 5173:2010 standards.
