Description

The Taguchi method was employed to determine optimum process parameters for friction stir welding of dissimilar joints between AA 6061 (Al, 0.84%Mg, 0.54%Si, 0.4%Fe, 0.24%Cu) and AA 7075 (Al, 5.58%Zn, 2.28%Mg, 1.6%Cu) aluminium alloys. Welding was performed using a Milltronics VMM-3917 vertical milling machine with an H13 tool and a mild steel backing plate. Tensile tests were conducted on dog bone shape specimens. The Taguchi L9 orthogonal array and optimisation approach was applied on three levels of three parameters, namely rotational speed (900-1100 rpm), transverse speed (90-110 mm/min) and tilt angle (3-5 degrees). The predicted value of the joint tensile strength was compared with that determined experimentally.
