Description
Friction stir welding experiments were undertaken on 2195-T8 (Al, 3.99%Cu, 1.09%Li) alloy sheets (thickness 5 mm) and the weldability, microstructure and mechanical properties of the fabricated butt joints were investigated. Welding was performed using a dismountable tool at rotational speeds of 300-900 rpm and translational speeds of 150-250 mm/min. Optical microscopy and SEM were employed to observe microstructures in the parent metal, HAZ, thermomechanically affected zone (TMAZ) and nugget. Mechanical properties were characterised by Vickers microhardness measurements and tensile tests. Issues discussed include tensile strength dependence on process parameters and fracture occurrence in the HAZ near the HAZ/TMAZ interface.
