Description

Friction stir welding experiments were conducted on AA 2024-T3 Al-Cu-Mg alloys to investigate the influence of backplate design on joint microstructure and mechanical properties. Trials were performed using three specially designed backplates based on medium carbon steel and a standard steel backplate. Microstructure in the nugget zone was observed by TEM and differential scanning calorimetry was carried out at a heating rate of 10 deg.C/min in the temperature range 50-550 deg.C. Room temperature uniaxial tensile tests were undertaken at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. The efficacy of the specially designed backplates was assessed with respect to the strength-ductility synergy.
