Description

Friction stir welding (FSW) experiments were undertaken on 4142 low alloy and S7 tool steels as well as dissimilar steel combinations and the microstructure and mechanical properties of the welded joints were investigated. FSW was conducted using an "MTS-istir-10" system with high-temperature W-Re-HfC pin tools incorporating a convex shoulder and a tapered pin design. The main process parameters included a rotational speed of 200-400 rpm, a travel speed of 25.4-50.8 mm/min and a plunge depth of 3.3-3.8 mm. Dissimilar partial penetration butt welds were fabricated in both advancing and retreating side combinations. Microstructure was observed by optical microscopy. Mechanical properties were characterised by Vickers microhardness measurements and room temperature transverse tensile testing. The occurrence of grain refinement and significant hardening in the nugget and HAZ is discussed.
