Description
In relation to the development of friction stir welding (FSW) technology for railway rolling stock manufacture in China, an investigation is presented into the microstructure and mechanical properties of AA 6005A-T6 aluminium alloy (Al, 0.56%Mg, 0.75%Si) FSW sidewall panels. FSW experiments were conducted at a rotational speed of 1400 rpm and a translational speed of 600 mm/min. Welded joint microstructure was observed by optical microscopy and field emission SEM. Mechanical properties were characterised by tensile tests and fatigue properties determined using a computer-controlled high frequency fatigue testing machine. Application of the FSW technique to railway carriage body production is discussed.
