Description
An investigation is presented into the occurrence of a grey line in x-ray diffraction of friction stir welded joints of AA 2024-T62 aluminium alloys, and its influence on mechanical and fatigue properties. Welding in 2 mm sheet was performed using an FSW2-4CX-006 machine at a rotational speed of 1000 rpm and a traverse speed of 200 mm/min. Tensile properties and fatigue life were measured with a GZ-100C universal testing machine. Cross-sectional microstructures were observed by optical microscopy, electron backscattering diffraction and electron probe microanalysis. Issues discussed include the microstructure of the nugget and thermomechanically affected zone as well as the fracture toughness of the welded joints.
