Description
Friction stir welding (FSW) experiments were undertaken on pure aluminium (A1050) sheets (thickness 5 mm), and the material flow during welding was visualised in 3D by x-ray radiography using a tiny spherical tungsten tracer. FSW was performed in position control mode using a columnar unthreaded tool made from Si3N4. Tracer movement during welding was observed by two pairs of x-ray transmission real-time imaging systems, and 3D material flow was obtained by following the locus of the tracer. Issues discussed include the flow zone around the probe, the tilting of horizontal circular flow around the probe by convection, and the relative velocities of material flow on the outer and inner sides in the stir zone.
