Description
Butt joints between dissimilar aluminium alloys were fabricated by friction stir spot welding (FSSW) in order to investigate the influence of process conditions on material flow phenomena and intermixing patterns. The dissimilar joint combinations studied comprised sheet specimens (thickness 3 mm) of 2024-T3/7075-T6 and 5754-H22/6082-T6. Welding was performed in an MTS ISTIR PDS machine using an interchangeable pin tool design involving a cylindrical plain shoulder with either a cylindrical non-threaded or threaded pin. The process parameters varied were rotational speed (400 or 1000 rpm) and dwell time (0-10 s). Joint microstructure was observed by optical microscopy. Rotational flow features of the plasticised material around the tool pin are discussed.
