Description
Butt joints were fabricated in sheet specimens of 2017A-T451 alloys (Al, 4.14%Cu) and cast plates of Al, 8.6%Si, 0.31%Mg by friction stir welding (FSW) and their microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated. Welding experiments were conducted with the welding line in the centre, shifted towards the advancing side (2017A) and shifted towards the retreating side (AlSi9Mg). Process parameters included a tool rotational speed of 450-710 rpm and a travel speed of 450-1120 mm/min. Joint microstructure was observed by optical microscopy and fracture surfaces were examined using SEM with an energy dispersive spectroscopy detector. Mechanical properties were characterised by microhardness profile measurements and tensile tests.
