Description

A kinematic approach is presented for modelling the friction stir welding process and the relationship between tool geometry and process parameters. The model was used to describe the correlation between features of the weld nugget, process parameters, weld tool geometry and weld strength. Numerical results were validated with experimental data,. Butt welds were made using self-reacting FSW in AA2195-T87 AlCu alloy (0.357 inch thickness). The microstructure, hardness and geometry and strength of the weld nugget were determined. Use of the correlation to select process parameters for a given tool geometry to optimise weld strength is discussed.
