Description
An experimental investigation was made into the friction stir weldability of MRI 320D magnesium alloy and of hybrid joints between AZ91D and rolled aluminium alloy AA5454. Welding was optimised to perform FSW joints of light metal alloys with a thickness of up to 10 mm. During welding the average process temperature along the butt weld was measured using five equidistant thermocouples. Rotational speed of the steel welding tool was varied (220-460 rpm) in order to find a suitable welding temperature range for successful FSW of Mg/Al joints. Microstructures of the welded joints were examined using optical and SEM methods. Mechanical properties were determined included microhardness and tensile strength was measured.
