Description
An experimental study was made of the effect of friction stir processing (FSP) and the influence of process parameters on the microstructure and mechanical properties of cast magnesium AZ91 alloy. FSP tests were conducted on die cast plates of 4 mm thickness AZ91 (Mg, 8.5-9.5%Al, 0.45-0.9%Zn, 0.17-0.4%Mn). Thermal treatment was carried out to modify the distribution and morphology of the beta-Mg17-Al12 phase for improving the processability of the alloy. Grain structures of the welded specimens were examined by optical and SEM methods. Microhardness measurements were conducted at various locations. FSP was performed under different cooling conditions, by the use of a copper mould in between the backing plate and the AZ91 plate and pouring liquid nitrogen into the mould. The influences of initial material condition and FSP cooling rate on microstructure, particularly grain refinement, and mechanical properties are discussed.
