Description

The integration of friction stir welding (FSW) into the manufacturing sequence of spinformed domes of aluminium alloys is presented in terms of its optimisation and the specific iterations required with the prior and follow-up procedures of the manufacturing process. The domes are for use in the cryogenic tanks of the European launcher system Ariane 5 and presently welding using TIG welding. The advantages of the FSW process in this application are initially outlined. Optimisation studies of FSW with aluminium alloys AA2219, aluminium lithium AA2195 and AA7075 are highlighted and the stages of the spinform process are listed. The characteristics and requirements of each of the process stages, necessary for the FSW process are then described. Test specimens were prepared for simulation of the process chain in order to identify welding parameters at sample level. These parameters were then implemented to combine the FSW technology with spinforming to manufacture domes with the AA2219 alloy.
