Description
An experimental investigation was conducted into the friction stir welding (FSW) of 6 mm thickness aluminium alloy AA6082-T6 using welding conditions slightly outside the common process window. The microstructure, quality and fatigue strength of the welds were examined. Al alloy specimens (Al, 0.97%Si, 0.63%Mg, 0.47%Mn, 0.22%Fe, 0.02%Ti, 0.01%Cu) were butt welded with a 5651 tool with 5 mm pin diameter and 13 mm shoulder diameter, tool tilt of 2 degrees, welding speed of 700 mm/min and tool rotation of 1900 rpm. Manual free bend tests were conducted on selected samples. Tensile tests were performed to measure tensile and yield strength and microhardness measurements were also made. Axial stress-controlled fatigue tests were performed to a maximum of 10,000,000 cycles. Fatigue strength was related to weld quality by metallographic investigation.
