Description

An experimental investigation was conducted of the microstructure and mechanical properties of friction stir welded (FSW) aluminium alloy butt joints, with detailed analysis on the influence of the FSW process on the microhardness profile and changes of grain size in the different weld zones. Aluminium alloy AA5454 of composition Al, 2.4-3.0%Mg, 0.5-1.0%Mn, 0.4%Fe, 0.25%Zn, 0.25%Si, 0.2%Ti, 0.1%Cu, 0.05-0.2%Cr, in the normalised condition, were FSW using a nickel-cobalt MP159 tool. Tensile tests were performed on the parent material and the welded joints in order to compare tensile strengths, elongation and fracture. Microstructure and grain size changes in the different weld zones were examined using a LEICA picture analysis system.
