Description

The results of quality assessments, based on visual examination, mechanical testing, analysis of weld structures and hardness testing, of both similar and dissimilar friction stir welded (FSW) joints of aluminium casting alloys EN AC-42100, EN AC-43200 (AK9) and EN AC-45000 (AK64) as well as a mechanically worked alloy EN AW-2017A, are presented. A conventional tool of tungsten-molybdenum high speed steel was used during welding. Butt and tee welds were made at different rotational speeds using 6.0 mm plates and NDT tests including visual and radiography were used to examine the weld quality. Tensile strength was measured as a function of rotational speed (500-1700 rpm) and detailed assessment is made of hardness measurements in the different weld zones. Use of friction stir welding to produce joints between two screwed rods of alloy EN AW-2017A with plates of EN AC-42100 alloy was also investigated.
