Description

The evolution of microstructure and mechanisms occurring at the (sub)micron scale during friction stir spot welding of transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) steel were investigated. Welds were made in TRIP690 steel (0.24%C, 1.6%Al, 2%Mn, 0.3%Si, 0.005%B, 0.6%Cr+Mo, 0.2%Nb+Ti), 1.2 mm thickness, coated with zinc. The sheets were welded in an overlap configuration using a PCBN tool. The influence of the tool rotational speed (500, 100 and 1500 rpm) on the microstructure (studied using light microscopy, SEM and ESBD), lap shear tensile strength and microhardness was studied.
