Description
The material flow and microstructural evolution during friction stir processing of A356 cast alloy (Al, 7%Si, 0.3%Mg, 6.4 mm thickness) using tools of H13 tool steel were investigated. The deformation and microstructure in the stir zone were studied by optical and scanning electron microscopes. The wide variation and segregation observed in the friction stir zone are discussed in terms of the shear and strain of the alpha-Al dendrites and eutectic Al-Si. The influence of the rotation speed and forward speed on material flow was determined and the mechanisms of microstructure formation are discussed. Textures and estimated strain values are also presented for the various stir zones.
