Description

The microstructure, hardness, tensile strength and fracture toughness of friction stir welds in cryogenic tanks made from standard AA2219 AlCu alloy and advanced AA2195 AlCuLi alloy (5 mm thickness) were investigated. AA2195 has relatively low density, high stiffness and high strength combined with good fracture toughness, giving suitability for cryogenic tanks in space applications. Friction stir welding was carried out to produce AA2195/AA2195 and dissimilar AA2195/AA2219 welds and weld properties were compared with those for the parent material, conventional TIG welds and published data. Ultimate tensile strength was determined down to 20 K. The failure mechanism and joint reliability were evaluated using optical and scanning electron microscopies. The feasibility of this process, which used a standard pin and shoulder tool and only minor post-weld flash removal, for industrial applications is discussed.
