Description

The microstructure and corrosion properties of welded joints in Inconel 22 (Alloy 22 or NO6022) made by friction stir welding (FSW) were investigated. Bead-on-plate welds were produced in Alloy 22 (59.6%Ni, 13.43%Mo, 0.22%Cr, 3.29%W, 3.17%Fe, 0.84%Co, 6.35 mm thickness) using pin tools of polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN). Topologically closed packed (TCP) phases that were precipitated in the FSW nugget were studied and compared with those from EB and TIG welds. Parent metal and welds produced by FSW, EB and TIG welding were aged at 650-760 for 60 h. The distinct banding and the fine, equiaxed grains in the microstructure found with the FSW welds are discussed together with the increase in the fraction of the TCP phases with ageing temperature. The pitting and repassivation potentials of Alloy 22 in 6M calcium chloride were compared.
