Description
The modification of a thermally sprayed cemented layer of WC-CrC-Ni (WC-20%CrC-7%Ni) and WC-Co (WC-12%Co) using friction stir processing (FSP) was investigated. Layers of WC-CrC-Ni and WC-Co were sprayed onto SKD61 substrate (17 mm thickness) by HVOF spraying, before modification with FSP. FSP was carried out using a sintered WC-Co cemented carbide tool; rotation rate was 600 rpm and travel speed 50 mm/min. Microstructure, hardness, porosity, grain size, plastic flow and deformation were determined. The reduction and disappearance of defects in the cemented carbide layer and the increase in hardness following FSP is discussed.
