Description
Two initiatives are presented to develop friction stir welding (FSW) and friction stir spot welding (FSSW) design data for the aerospace industry: a path independence initiative for FSW butt joints and qualification of FSSW welds for lap joints as in situ integral fasteners. The path independence formulation was developed by considering the thermal and mechanical elements of FSW, a performance specification model was proposed and different tool designs were evaluated with respect to average tensile strength. In the in situ integral fastener formulation, individual spots were treated similarly to conventional fasteners. Fatigue crack growth data for FSSW joints from static and dynamic tests are reported in relation to residual stresses and the elimination of stress concentration associated with rivet holes.
