Description

An investigation is presented into pore formation and grain growth in aluminium alloys during TIG welding after friction stir welding (FSW), for reasons of repair or fabrication, and into two methods to suppress these problems. The material studied was an AA5083 alloy sheet (thickness 5 mm). FSW was performed at a rotational speed of 600 rpm, welding speed of 100 mm/min and tilt angle of 3 degrees in air or under Ar shielding gas. Subsequent arc welding was conducted in the vertical position by TIG or ultrasonic TIG (frequency 20 kHz) processes. Pore distribution and blowhole formation were investigated by microstructure observations. The beneficial effects of Ar shielding gas in FSW and ultrasonic wave addition in TIG are discussed.
