Description
Two common approaches to describe kinematics in simulations of the friction stir welding (FSW) process, the Lagrangian representation and the Eulerian representation, were compared using "ABAQUS/Explicit" and "FLUENT" software programs, and the influence of the numerical algorithm and numerical parameters on the results was assessed. The material system considered was a 2024-T3 aluminium alloy sheet. The ABAQUS/Explicit and FLUENT programs were employed to simulate temperature profiles and velocity fields. The influence of the sheet-tool contact and mass scaling on the friction coefficient was analysed. The use of an arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian approach was examined with respect to the von Mises stress distribution in a pure elastoplastic simulation.
