Description
The principles are presented of stationary shoulder friction stir welding (FSW) with examples of the weld microstructures that can be achieved. Trials were conducted on 6.35 mm plate of Ti-6%Al-4%V titanium alloy, with spindle speed of 400 rpm and traverse speed of 60 mm/min under argon shielding gas. A W-25%Re tapered probe FSW tool with a shoulder of silicon carbide was used. Weld microstructure and microhardness were determined. In particular, one weld was subjected to a very detailed metallurgical assessment using electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD) mapping, giving valuable information on the nature of the microstructure and textures and how they vary in different parts of the weld.
