Description

3D fully-coupled thermomechanical models implemented in the ABAQUS finite element code were developed to investigate residual stresses and distortion in friction stir welding (FSW) and three case studies were examined. The temperature field obtained from a nonlinear transient thermal analysis was coupled with an elastoplastic mechanical model to predict residual stresses and deformation. The residual state of the simulated structure was used as the input in an analysis of the welded joint under service loads. The benchmark models considered were bead on plate welding under different clamping conditions and FSW of L-shaped stringers. The stress distribution along the transverse direction of the plate for a temperature-dependent yield stress model is discussed for the various case studies.
