Description

A conceptual model was developed to describe the relationship between process variables and physical properties such as spindle torque, heat generation and workpiece temperature distribution for friction stir welding of aluminium alloys. The materials considered were plate specimens (thickness 25.4 mm) of AA 5083 (Al, 4-4.9%Mg) and AA 2195 (Al, 3.7-4.3%Cu). Three case studies were examined in the context of the conceptual model, looking at the effect on welding conditions of changing travel speed, spindle speed and anvil insulation.
