Description
A silicon nitride (Si3N4) tool with a threaded pin was used for friction spot joining of ultralow carbon (0.004-0.01%C, 0.1-0.16%Mn) and DP 590 grade dual-phase high-strength steel (0.06%C, 0.49%Si, 1.23%Mn) sheets, and the microstructure and mechanical properties of the welded joints were investigated. The friction spot joining machine incorporated AC servomotors for loading and rotation of the tool. Both bare and TiCN coated tools were studied and argon shielding gas was applied during the process. Cross-sectional microstructure was observed by optical microscopy and fracture surfaces were examined by SEM. Electron probe microanalysis was employed to identify contaminants in the stir zone. Mechanical properties were characterised by microhardness measurements, tensile shear and cross section tests.
