Description

An analysis procedure was developed to relate the geometry and microstructure of lap configuration friction spot welds to the joints' mechanical behaviour. Using 2 mm thickness aluminium alloy AA 2024-T3 sheet as the basis for simulation, a three-dimensional model was developed using SolidWorks and Abaqus software, which took account of stirred zone, thermomechanically affected zone, heat affected zone and parent metal for two depths of shoulder plunge and three rotation speeds (1700-2700 rpm). Finite element stress distributions were then produced for lap-shear and cross-tensile test specimen configurations. A comparison was made with stress levels and distortion measured in experiments.
