Description
A series of friction stir welding (FSW) experiments using threaded tool pins and AA5083 (Al, 4.5%Mg, 0.6%Mn) or A356 (Al, 7%Si, 0.3%Mg) workpiece alloys was undertaken in order to understand material flow mode within thread spaces and its influence on weld nugget zone formation. FSW was conducted using a milling machine with tools fabricated from hardened H13 tool steel. Experiments were designed so that the pin would break and embed into the workpiece material. Cast alloy and welded joint microstructure was observed by optical microscopy and SEM. The relationships between the formation of banded structure (onion rings) and non-banded structure, rotational flow within thread spaces and shear material confinement within thread spaces are discussed.
