Description
An investigation is presented into the development of polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) and composite W-Re alloys with PCBN and diamond reinforcement as tool materials for friction stir welding of high temperature materials. High-pressure, high-temperature sintering was employed to prepare PCBN composites from mixtures of cubic BN (cBN) powder and Al-containing compounds, and W-Re/cBN or W-Re/diamond composites from alloy powders and cBN or diamond particles. The microstructure of the composites was observed by SEM. Mechanical properties were characterised by fractography as well as measurement of wear resistance, bulk Vickers hardness and flexural strength using a four-point bend method. The influence of cBN grain size and sintering temperature on mechanical properties is discussed.
