Description
Friction stir welding experiments were undertaken on thin sheet specimens (thickness 0.8 mm) of 5754-H111 alloys (Al, 2.7%Mg) in a butt joint configuration, and the influence of process conditions on microstructural, mechanical and corrosion properties was investigated. Welding was performed using a displacement controlled 3-axis CNC milling machine at a rotational speed of 4000 rpm. Process parameters varied were welding speed (100-1000 mm/min), tool shoulder geometry (convex or concave) and tilt angle (0-2 degrees). Microstructure was observed by optical microscopy and SEM. Mechanical properties were characterised by transverse tensile testing and bend testing. Corrosion resistance was evaluated by pitting, crevice, intergranular and exfoliation corrosion testing.
