Description
Microstructure observations and bending tests were employed to investigate the basal plane texture and room temperature formability of AZ31 magnesium alloy rolled and extruded sheets (thickness 3 mm) treated by friction stir processing (FSP). Overlapped four-run FSP experiments were conducted at a tilt angle of 3 degrees, travel speed of 200 mm/min and rotational speed of 800-1500 rpm. Microstructures were observed by optical microscopy after mechanical polishing and etching. X-ray texture analysis was performed by the Schulz reflection method. V-bending tests were undertaken at different bending curvatures. Issues discussed include the occurrence of mixed grain size or deformation twins and the dependence of formability on FSP conditions.
