Description
In relation to the industrialisation of the friction stir welding process to facilitate qualification of welding machines for different applications, a methodology is presented based on the interactions between tool, workpiece and material. Issues discussed include: a global approach to analyse the tool/workpiece interface; tool/workpiece kinematics and their mechanical interaction; determination of process and machine characteristic parameters; and analyses of force, torque and power during different welding phases. Application to the circular welding of two dissimilar aluminium alloys (2000 and 6000 series) is described.
