Description
In relation to the requirement for automatic inspection of weld quality during the friction stir welding (FSW) process, the "MonStir" process monitoring system was developed to analyse measured process forces and their frequency spectra, and an investigation was conducted to analyse the system's ability to detect elongated cavities. Wrought AA5454 alloy sheets (thickness 3.5 mm) were friction stir welded on a milling machine. The "MonStir" algorithm was used to correlate the weld quality to welding forces, examine the relationship between microstructure and process parameters, and detect elongated cavities in the nugget and thermomechanically affected zone. Ultrasound immersion tests were performed to verify the process monitoring results.
