Description
The bobbin tool or self-reacting tool variant of the friction stir welding process was investigated on butt joints of various 2000 series aluminium alloys for aircraft fuselage applications; welding feasibility tests were conducted in pin length control, and the relationship between process parameters and welding results was examined. The materials studied were sheet specimens (thickness 2.5 or 3.5 mm) of 2139 Al-Cu alloy and 2198 and 2199 Al-Cu-Li alloys. The process parameters varied were rotational speed and travel speed. Force and torque were monitored during welding and processing windows were established. Welded joints were characterised by visual inspection, metallography and bending tests. A bobbin tool design for thermally stable force control was developed.
