Description
An investigation is presented into the effects of process parameters (welding and rotational speeds) during friction stir welding (FSW) on the hardness and tensile properties of welded joints fabricated in butt configuration sheet specimens (thickness 2 and 3.2 mm, respectively) of AA 7075-T6 and AA 2098-T851 aerospace alloys. FSW trials were conducted in position control welding mode using a cylindrical threaded pin at welding speeds of 30-1200 mm/minute and rotational speeds of 600-1800 rpm. Welded joints were characterised by optical microscopy microstructure observations, microhardness measurements and tensile testing. A two-step hardening model was invoked to explain the dependence of hardness profile on welding speed.
