Description
The fatigue performance of friction stir welded butt joints in 2024-T3 aluminium alloy plate (thickness 6.35 mm) was investigated by adopting six different tool designs and using a design of experiments analysis over a wide range of process parameters, and the influence of surface conditions and microstructural variations was examined. A path independence study was conducted to determine the effect of various pin tool designs (including "Tri-flute Scroll", "Trivex" and "Wiper") on the transverse tensile strength of friction stir butt welds. Response surface methodology was employed to determine optimum process parameters (travel speed, spindle speed and forge load) for each tool. The welded joints were characterised by hardness measurements, tensile tests, fatigue tests and optical microscopy to observe volumetric defects.
