Description
Friction stir welding (FSW) was employed to fabricate a single overlap joint between sheet specimens (thickness 1.5 mm) of an AA 6181-T4 aluminium alloy and ZStE-340 high-strength steel, and weld phase composition, microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated. Local microstructure, characteristics of intermetallics and texture were observed by SEM, electron backscattered diffraction and TEM. Mechanical properties were characterised by overlap shear tests. Issues discussed include the effects of plastic flow and dynamic recrystallisation on grain structure in the stir zone and thermomechanically affected zone, intermetallic phase formation along the Al-steel interface, and the occurrence of small microcracks perpendicular to the plastic deformation direction.
