Description
Orientation imaging microscopy was employed to characterise the stir zone microstructure in relation to the defect formation tendency and evaluate the peak temperature at different locations in friction stir welded Ti-6%Al-4%V specimens. Welded joints were produced under different process conditions by changing the tool rotational speed and controlling the heat input with external factors. Stir zone regions close to the top surface and near the bottom of the weld were investigated. The relationship between grain size variation, thermomechanical conditions in different regions of the welded joint and flow characteristics during welding is discussed.
