Description
Friction stir welding (FSW) tools, equipment and auxiliary devices were developed for application to heavy section aluminium alloy plate (thickness 40-70 mm), and the microstructure and mechanical properties of welded joints fabricated by the procedure were investigated. The material studied was a 5A06 grade (Al, 5.8-6.8%Mg). FSW was performed at a rotational speed of 320 or 360 rpm and a welding speed of 60 or 80 mm/min. Welded joint macrostructure and microstructure were observed by optical microscopy. Mechanical properties were characterised by hardness measurements, tensile tests and fracture pattern analysis. The need for cooling devices to compensate for excessive heat input is discussed.
