Description
An investigation was undertaken to identify the main factors influencing abnormal grain growth behaviour during post weld solution heat treatment of 2219-O aluminium alloy (Al, 5.8-6.8%Cu) friction stir welded (FSW) joints. Sheet specimens (thickness 5 mm) were longitudinally butt welded by FSW at a welding speed of 100 mm/min. The solution heat treatment was performed at 500 or 540 deg.C for 30-300 s. Welded joint microstructure was observed by optical microscopy and TEM. Contrast tests were undertaken to study the effect of solution heat treatment conditions on the initiation location and coarsening procedure of grains.
